On Windows systems, the memory mapping technique used in 32-bit mode can actually be quite effective, and at least one vendor has commented that while in real world testing, 32-bit Windows has proven to be more efficient than 64-bit in many situations.

Personally, I’ve never thought of myself as a MS fan, but I’ve always had a soft spot for Windows. I knew many of the techies of the DOS era and it was only a matter of time before the corporate world would jump on the Windows bandwagon. I knew it would be a good thing, as I really didn’t want to see the MS competition overtake IBM, but that happened in short order.

In the DOS days, Windows was a big part of why I stayed with IBM. It didn’t have the elegance of DOS (usually), but it did have something that no other OS had at that time: it was a multi-tasking system that worked well. At a single time, Windows 2.x could run several different programs at once, and I liked that. Why else would you want to use an OS where you can’t easily switch programs without rebooting?

On the other hand, I have now used Windows for over a decade. Now I use Apple products because I like those. I had to hire a few employees who used Windows exclusively because, despite the hassles, they had better access to hardware. I still use Windows occasionally, but I don’t miss it.

This is all a very British point of view. If you look at the usage of Windows by school children in America, I think you’d have the same outlook. Would anybody still want to play Cities XL on IBM or compatibles?
