Azureus is a very popular BitTorrent application on Linux and other platforms. It is open source and has a lot of features. But it can have some problems at times. The issue is to hide entire, certain files/directories on your system (but with the caveat that you can’t delete them or move them to your trash/trash can).

The easiest way is to create a symbolic link. Let’s say I want to hide my downloads folder. Create a symbolic link to it:

sudo ln -s /home/user/.bittorrent/downloads /downloads

Then you can do a little trick to move the symbolic link to the trash can where you can’t delete or move it. The following is the command to do that.

Though I don’t think it is of much significance, the command that is executed is actually:

sudo rm /downloads && mv /home/user/.bittorrent/downloads /home/user/.trash

If you want to delete the symbolic link completely, you need to do:

sudo rm /downloads

To find out the directory symbolic link to your downloads folder, run:

ls -l /home/user/.bittorrent/downloads

If you are concerned about security, though, you don’t want to create links to directories. Let’s say you want to use symbolic links to hide a folder. Just create a shortcut to it.

sudo ln -s /home/user/Desktop/blah.zip /home/user/.bittorrent/unlisted

If you want to move it to your trash can, do:

sudo mv /home/user/Desktop/blah.zip /home/user/.trash
