Star of Imaginative Learning, Ann McCrea, discusses the importance of fresh ideas, innovation, and creativity.

Q: What kind of excitement are you seeing in education right now?

Ann McCrea: I see many more people taking risks, and more people thinking outside the box about what learning can and should look like. Teachers are not so predictable anymore, and that is a good thing. They are experimenting with ways of “doing things differently” and they are getting results.

Q: What are you most excited about as you enter your twenty-third year as an educator?

Ann McCrea: My eagerness to discover what is new and what is best for teaching and learning is stronger than ever. I love what is happening, and I love helping people see where we can take education next.

Q: When you are not working as an educator, what do you enjoy doing?

Ann McCrea: I love playing my guitar (almost every day!) and spending time with my family. I am a bad dancer, and after 31 years, I have a lot of dancing in me. I also enjoy reading (all kinds of books), gardening, grilling dinner, and watching my favorite TV shows and movies.

Q: Is there a particular teacher you admire? What is it about that teacher’s work that you admire?

Ann McCrea: Jack Britton, who taught seventh grade for two years at Cherokee, turned forty years old the year I started. Jack was an amazing teacher. He paid attention to detail, was enthusiastic, and spent hours in the preparation of his lessons. But Jack taught almost every day of the week. Although we saw him only at the start of the school year, he would pop in throughout the year to have a conversation about his students. He was always available and so kind. Jack never failed a student in any way. Jack was a source of much hope for his students and a good example of making the most of what you have. I had a wonderful teacher in my seventh-grade English class when I went to first grade. She was an exceptional writer. I appreciate
