In contrast to other CAD programs of the time, which had heavy command-line based interfaces, AutoCAD had a highly visual point-and-click user interface, which was a feature that was frequently referred to as “the CAD eye”. It was one of the reasons that AutoCAD’s commercial success was based on the widespread popularity of Windows in the 1980s, whereas most competing CAD products were based on Unix. In contrast to other commercially available CAD programs, AutoCAD was not distributed as a package with graphic output device drivers, but as an app that had to be installed manually.

AutoCAD was also the first commercial CAD application to support stereo graphics output to stereo projection screens. The first screen capable of outputting stereo graphics for AutoCAD was the Rainbow model 715, released by Rainbow Technologies, Inc. in 1986.

Later, it was released as AutoCAD 360, which offered integrated architectural, site, and civil (ASCI) construction capabilities.
