AutoCAD’s basic concept was conceived by Ted Dziuk, AutoDesk’s first general manager. Dziuk was working at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada when he learned that a windowing operating system was being developed by his wife’s university, the University of Waterloo. In 1975, Dziuk made the decision to use this windowing operating system for the CAD software he and a friend, Jim Hannon, were developing.

In 1982, Hannon released the first public version of AutoCAD, a 32-bit Win32 DOS program on a CD-ROM that was distributed to a few AutoDesk colleagues. Dziuk later approached his friend, Bryce McPherson, who was also working at AutoDesk, about the product.

AutoCAD was a great success, receiving rave reviews from users, but Dziuk felt that a commercial product was needed to establish AutoDesk’s market position. Dziuk first approached John Knudson, who had recently left his position as manager of technical services for Stratego, a commercial CAD product at the time. Knudson later approached Jim Hannon, Bryce McPherson, and his wife, Marlin, to join his newly formed company, AutoDesk, Inc.

AutoDesk released AutoCAD 1.0 in December 1982. The first version of AutoCAD included the ability to place solid and spline objects onto a drawing, a predecessor to the current multi-level objects and objects capability. AutoCAD 1.0 cost $4,495.

AutoCAD 2.0 was released in July 1983 and included a few of the first onscreen menu options, many of which are still used today. The AutoCAD 2.0 release also changed the user interface. Rather than using a standalone PC with a hard drive, AutoCAD 2.0 ran on a PC’s display using a special graphics adapter card.

AutoCAD 2.1 was released in February 1984 and included many of the first “features”. These included the ability to create arcs and circles with radius instead of straight lines, and the ability to attach parts to arcs and circles, allowing for the creation of three-dimensional objects. Click the Configuration tab and in the Display / General section change the option called Theme Color to:

Run the autocad.exe and let it install the “Autocad Theme”.

You can now go to the Customization section and change the theme that is used by Autocad.

Once you have changed the theme, you will need to update the update.zip file with the new theme.

You can go to File\Export folder and save the “Theme” folder as a new zip archive, you will find the new Theme folder in this archive.

The default Theme is 8A26DF, but if you save this zip in your normal theme folder, and if you can find your Theme folder and its contents, you can load this theme in the Configuration and you should get the same appearance.
