AutoCAD: The Story of a Software Invention

The idea for AutoCAD came to its creator, Evan, as he was fixing a drafting table for his nephew. This kid was in his fourth year of school, with math, science, and English classes. He was also an engineering student, which, for a fourth-grader, is like being a fourth-grade science teacher.

But my nephew wasn’t very gifted with CAD tools. He didn’t know what most of the terms meant in CAD. He could use tables, pictures, and other simple features of drafting, but he couldn’t do simple things like section views, slab views, exploded views, views of parts, or views of a drawing along the x- and y-axes.

So Evan had a lot of free time on his hands. He wasn’t going to waste it; he spent all his free time working on a new CAD system.

As a college student, Evan was not particularly interested in CAD. He studied computer engineering, not computer-aided engineering. His home CAD work was typing schematic drawings up on a typewriter and drawing them on a sheet of paper with a pencil. But when Evan was about 24 years old, his grandfather died. His family was in financial trouble, and he needed to make money fast. Evan decided he would have to learn CAD.

In the 1980s, CAD was a very special-interest market. There were only three popular CAD programs: AutoCAD, AutoCAD Light, and Cadalyst. To be listed on AutoCAD, a CAD program had to have a minimum of 10,000 units shipped. About 30,000 CAD programs were shipped in 1982 alone.

Now, this is no longer the case. Today there are thousands of CAD programs available for home use, with new CAD programs being launched every year. Some CAD programs are part of a commercial package, like Autodesk® AutoCAD LT® or Autodesk Inventor®, while others are sold as freeware or shareware. There are CAD programs for personal computers, mobile devices, and web apps.

(Beware of the haters out there who think that all CAD programs are the same. A CAD program is not a CAD program unless it has the ability to design, make, and print a physical model of your project.)

Ernesto Mastroianni – Camiseta Atomica

How many of you remember “Ernesto Mastroianni – Camiseta Atomica?” That’s the TV commercial in which a little boy is called Ernesto, and whenever the little boy gets excited, an Atomica shirt comes out from underneath his t-shirt.

I remember watching it as a kid. I think the idea was that Atomica was a brand of battery-operated clothing that would become more like a regular t-shirt when you got excited, and you were “free” to show your emotion (before all the freedom of, oh, say, the late nineties).

I loved the idea, but the product never caught on. I suppose that I might be part of the problem. I’m too old for the wardrobe of the “new” kids, and I prefer the freedom to express myself that fashion designers were offering in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I’m not sure Atomica’s clothing would have been the answer.

Fast forward to the present.

I’ve been writing about the idea of style as a social construct, where you adopt, or at least accept as natural, the style of the group you are part of. You may think that the only reason people wear similar clothes is that they have the same preferences as you, but that’s only part of the truth. In the social sciences, there is a concept called “conformity,” which refers to the tendency to match the preferences of others. Sometimes, people will respond to your style by adopting your preferences.

The concept applies to fashion, and it’s not so different from the concept of “fashionability.” I find this new trend in fashion to be hugely important. I’ve been thinking about this for a while now. The basic idea is that fashion is about looking good. If

Acetaminophen is one of the most widely used analgesic and antipyretic medications. In the present study, acetaminophen was administered to rats at two doses (1.3 g/kg, 2.6 g/kg) either alone or in combination with green tea extract (25, 50 mg/kg). The effects of green tea on acetaminophen hepatotoxicity were studied by measuring the levels of hepatic enzymes, lipid peroxidation and the activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase). The results showed that green tea extract reduced the level of hepatic enzymes, lipid peroxidation and the activities of antioxidant enzymes in acetaminophen treated rats. Also, green tea extract treatment to rats protected them from acetaminophen induced oxidative damage to the liver. This study suggests that green tea may protect against acetaminophen hepatotoxicity through its free radical scavenging ability.Q:
