You are the captain of the AstroViking, a first person spaceship that you use to explore the space faring universe. You must pilot your AstroViking through nine planets that, like an ever expanding supernova, are being thrown at you by a force known only as The Black Star. Your challenge is not only to survive, but also to explore, discover secrets and unravel mysteries as you delve into the depths of the cosmos. AstroViking: Legend is the ultimate high-definition dungeon crawler that will test your skills and willingness to explore.

AstroViking is the result of four years of development, currently being funded via a Kickstarter campaign, and it is a project to not only create a full game, but also to create the kind of project that people want to get behind. The final product will be free to play, and it will be fully cross platform, supporting Mac, Linux and Windows players alike.

The team is composed of five people, and the sound is done by a single man. I met up with Stuart Owens on Twitch ( ) to talk about the progress so far, and what it was like to make this game. The first thing to note is that the game’s name comes from a terrible typo on the Kickstarter page, which gave the game the more accurate title of AstroViking: Legend. It’s a question the rest of the team is still laughing about.

The journey that Stuart has taken from his initial start working with programming to making a fantastic looking and sounding game is one that few have been able to do. Stuart explained that his main goal with the project was to be as open as possible, to make a game that was genuinely for everyone. He explained that there are plenty of indie games out there that aim for specific demographics, like Teenagers (he says), or Adults. While that certainly makes sense from an advertising point of view, he did not think that was the right way to go about it, and he wanted to make a game for everyone, regardless of age. He also mentioned that he wanted the game to be a genre that was not often explored, so that it would stand out from the crowd.

The audio is completely unique. You play as the captain of an AstroViking, a spaceship that is slowly being thrown into space by a mysterious force. Every time you destroy a planet, the size of the next one gets bigger, and the stakes get higher
