Like many RPG fans I too was pretty excited about The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I was a big fan of Oblivion and I had always been a big fan of the Elder Scrolls franchise. My hope for Skyrim was that they would capture everything that was great about Oblivion and update it for the current generation. Luckily for me Skyrim delivers! I cannot say enough good things about this game.
One of the best things Skyrim has over Oblivion is an expansive world that is much bigger than Oblivion. At the moment of it’s release it had to be largest open world ever created for a video game. That’s right there is over 2.5 times as many lands to explore as Oblivion. In fact there are over 250 areas in the game. By comparison in Oblivion there are only 3 areas that you can explore.
The storyline is great! Many fans like me were left feeling a bit disappointed when Bethesda announced that they would be recreating Skyrim with a new engine instead of the game engine that they have been using for the past decade. But I have to admit that the new engine really does a great job.
Skyrim doesn’t skimp on the animations either. The game runs at a silky smooth framerate on the consoles, but even in the PC version the game does not skip a single frame.
The environments are so well done that you will immediately feel like you are in a different world. No more generic meshy looking environments with no detail just flat terrain.
The game offers a wealth of fun activities to do. Not only does Skyrim have a vast number of towns and locations to explore, there are guilds, training dummies, and even worgens in the game.
Thanks to Bethesda, now instead of playing the same game over and over again you have the option of reading new books and getting tips to help you during your adventures.
Another fun feature of Skyrim is that, for the most part, the world is open for exploration. You can go wherever you want and do whatever you want. The only thing that you can not do is kill the dragons.
In the past it has been traditional for games of this genre to have the player go into towns and pick up quests. In Skyrim you can not just enter the town, talk to the NPCs, and receive a quest. Instead you have to hunt down the quest givers and talk to them.
Now this may not be for everyone but I found that this was a very nice change.
