Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the “ultimate” fighting game that Super Smash Bros fans have been waiting for, and that does not disappoint. The game features more than 70 playable characters from the series’ various installments, several new characters, all-new modes, and much more. This review will cover all the new characters and several of the other exciting new features, including Competitive mode and the new battle arena.

MORE: One of the most exciting things about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is how many characters have been added to the game since the base installment. Almost the entire cast from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U has made its way to this game. Many of the more popular characters from the series are here, including Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Little Mac, and many others. This can make the game a little bit more overwhelming in the beginning as you’ll have to find your favorite fighters and memorize them. If you’re a new player and just came across Smash Ultimate, there are still many advantages to getting started by taking on the early opponents. Newcomers can appreciate their characters and the game’s presentation and control scheme without being overwhelmed.

The characters all look great, and with the exception of Samus, the sound design is very close to its 3DS and Wii U counterparts. GameCube Samus is less detailed than her PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch counterparts, but her graphics look more sophisticated than on handhelds. The game is just a bit simpler than its Wii U incarnation, requiring you to press a single directional button for some moves, instead of holding the B button and using both analog sticks.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s online features are in addition to local. Local play on the Switch only supports split-screen battles, but online play allows you to play as your character, as well as eight of their friends. This can be played in several different ways, including as a free-for-all or a team match. There are also several different modes in online play, including the aforementioned Battle Arenas, as well as many of the other modes from prior entries in the series, such as Smash Run, Smash Q, and more.

As for the competitive mode, it is the same as Ultimate’s previous iterations, bringing in some of the elements from different versions of the game
