What is Wimpy?
Wimpy is a futuristic music player that plays your music off of XML playlists. It looks like a thirties radio. Wimpy is composed of two parts: the webplayer, which is a Flash streaming MP3 player; and the embedded playlist, which is a web based XML playlist generator.
When I say “stations” in the following text, I mean stations in the web player, which are also known as rooms.
How does Wimpy work?
The webplayer provides a nice Flash based web based player that can play any type of mp3 file, within a few formats like AAC, MP4, and WMA. The embedded playlist is a client side piece that allows you to create your own XML playlist, which can be embedded into a website. When the webplayer sees the embedded playlist, it starts playing the XML playlist at the main station, which is also known as the playindex. It will automatically start playing music from the beginning of the playlist.

Wimpy is a cross browser mp3 player built using Ajax technologies, which means that it uses Flash for the web browser and JavaScript for the client side. It looks very much like a thirties radio ( a very cool one, even if I don’t think I’ll be a good Elvis impersonator.) It is very easy to use. Just play your song and the player starts streaming the song on your computer. If you prefer you can download it and play it from there, or you can choose to link the player to a web site to play the mp3.
The webplayer uses the download embed code to play the web player outside of your browser, and it works in most of the major browsers.
You can also embed the player into a web page using Flash. It’s very simple: copy the embed code, and paste it into the HEAD of your HTML document. If you are putting the player on a shared web server the player will usually disappear after a few minutes or use a password protection. You can set the password for the player when you first download it.
