Why Microsoft kept SourceSafe and the astroturfing war it’s caused
Whether or not you like SourceSafe, it has been around for a long time.
It was first released in 1993. The good old days.
It was initially the system Microsoft was using to manage all of the software they released internally. Over the years SourceSafe (the actual name was Source Code Control System) became a product at Microsoft itself and was never released to the public.
It was in 2000 that Microsoft officially released the product SourceSafe 6.0, the very same version that later got rebranded as Visual SourceSafe. Version 7 and later versions came with more features and integrated with the Microsoft Office system. As SourceSafe became more and more popular, it became important to understand the security threats of SourceSafe, especially for those in positions of power.
Travis Goodspeed, then a junior developer at Microsoft, called for a coup d’état against the reign of SourceSafe and SourceCode Control System.
“I think SourceSafe [is] a really big red flag and a way of people using Microsoft technology inappropriately,” he said in a presentation to the Visual Studio Development Center. “You’re locked into a system of controls. The controls are easy for the administrators to understand, but really hard for the developers and the users.”
Goodspeed was sent by the now-retired Gabe Newell, who was then the CEO of Valve Software, to write a stand-alone utility, codenamed “Project Zero”, to deploy SourceSafe-like functionality within the company. Goodspeed’s Project Zero would allow external users to manage projects, manipulate files, and even change the look of Windows 95 with very little effort.
Fast-forward a little over a decade, and Project Zero (codenamed “Tapehead”) is now known as Microsoft Office Source Control, which is a feature of Microsoft’s Office applications. When someone works on a document, then opens it up on another machine, it will be checked back into the source code repository.
