Photoshop CC 2015 includes many powerful features such as panoramas, layers, filters, a flattened or composite file, working with strokes, using a non-destructive file, and importing, resizing, and exporting photo-editing applications. This chapter offers a tour of the different components in Photoshop as well as how they work.

Understanding the Bridge

The main feature of Photoshop is the powerful way that it organizes and displays photos. You can view photos in the program in many different ways, including, in most cases, using Bridge. The Bridge module, shown in Figure 4-2, offers multiple ways of displaying images, such as displaying, editing, or sorting images in list, full-screen, browser, or slideshow views. You can arrange images in these different ways based on the things you want to see in each view.

Bridge gives you access to all the information regarding the photos stored in your computer. In addition to viewing all images, you can also organize images into folders, apply the same or different editing tools and actions to multiple photos, and even add metadata. The detailed image information displayed in the Bridge module includes basic characteristics such as image size, resolution, color mode, filename, creation date, and file type, as well as additional information like camera and lens type, when the image was taken, color balance, image editing settings, and so on.

The three main tabs at the bottom of the Bridge module (shown in Figure 4-3) are General, Files (where you find the images in the Photo Library), and Info (where you can add more metadata to a photo). You also have the ability to control when the Bridge module opens and close.

Viewing Photos in Bridge

The Bridge module in Photoshop CC 2015 opens with the default view. Figure 4-4a shows the default view that displays photos arranged in a grid. The columns represent the different tabs and the rows represent individual images. You can also rearrange the images in a different order.

Introduction to Photoshop Elements

Part I: Preparing to Begin

The first step is to install Photoshop Elements, or decide if you want to install it on your PC or Mac. To download the free versions of Photoshop Elements, see Adobe Photoshop Elements for home users. However, to create graphic images at the highest possible quality you need Photoshop Elements, available as a permanent program or a trial version.

The download is a digital package that includes the applications, Adobe Camera Raw, Adobe Photoshop Elements 14.5, Adobe Photoshop Elements 14, and Adobe Photoshop Elements 14 Pro.

Downloading and installing Photoshop Elements

Download the package from one of the links below. If you have Mac or Windows operating system, follow the link to the download for your system.

Setting up Photoshop Elements

After you have downloaded the package, follow the instructions below to start using Photoshop Elements. The program will automatically run when you insert a blank CD or DVD. If you have a hard drive to which to download Photoshop Elements, download it from a link below.

To start Photoshop Elements, insert the CD or DVD into your computer’s optical drive. During installation, a wizard guide you through the first steps. Read through the steps and feel free to click through each step. When you are asked to decide whether you want to install Photoshop Elements, click Install.

When you click OK, Adobe starts the Photoshop Elements installation wizard. During installation, the program asks you to decide which operating system to use to start it. Click Continue to see the list of different versions, and select the version of Adobe Photoshop Elements you want to install. The version you choose will determine what programs you will be able to install. For example, if you have Windows 7, you will not have the option to choose the Macintosh version.

You can use three different installation types. Click to select the one you prefer.

I found this course in the net [slim pickings so far – mostly ‘how to improve your finances’ which I have written about here, here, here and here], and started watching the DVDs. I thought it might give me a little inspiration to stay away from the deep pockets. I even picked up a copy of the first ‘Total Money Makeover’.

I thought I’d post about that here – I haven’t actually done it myself yet (we’re at the price lock in stage, which means the course hasn’t gone up in price), but am wondering if you might think it useful. On reflection though, I will probably get the TotallyMoney Makeover later in the year.

It’s the ‘25 Minute Money Makeover’ that’s the course I’m talking about.

What I found was a completely passive course.

It did show me some things about myself that I am aware of, and that I am doing reasonably well on. But it didn’t really offer any much needed motivation to change anything. In fact, I would say it made me more aware of how much I don’t understand money and debt.

And that’s why I’m going to hold off on the Total Money Makeover. I do see the value of some sort of education, and knowing where I am coming from is useful – but I’m not interested in something like this. It just showed me too much and I was too much for me.

I’ll make more sense when I try it.

PS – I did have some issues with their ‘system’ where if you wanted to do a 25 minute makeover you had to pay a rather hefty subscription fee. But I can understand it. It is quite hard to run a subscription service without some sort of cost model. I think they have managed it though, but I might be wrong.

With this in mind, I was excited when TheSavingAngel [formerly RedundantMum] posted in to say she had got a package together (she said “I haven’t actually got it yet, but have been promised”). And she could have one for £3.95. And so of course I jumped on it.
