My Memory Monitor, released yesterday, is the latest in an unexpected run of Windows utilities that offer a vital service, but are simple to use and free. Written by Felix Obermaier of OBPROD, the application monitors resource consumption in real time and generates a report. The tool is constantly processing and producing new measurements, but you should only allow as many of the resources as you need.
There are two views of data for the application: The memory usage chart and the process list.
The user interface for My Memory Monitor is shown above. At the top of the window, located at the left side of the display, is a small button that switches between the two views.
As a user of this program, you get a usage bar, an indicator in the bottom left corner of the screen. It includes buttons to each side of the bar. On the left button, you get the ability to toggle between process list and chart. On the right side, you can switch between real-time and historical measurement mode.
If you click on the left button, you’ll get a lot of information for the selected application. However, if you click the right button, you’ll see information on all the currently-running processes.
There is also a numeric indicator inside the bar. This counts the number of user interface or system threads for a certain application. Each thread represents a different program on your computer, and you can identify the running ones with the names and icons.
As mentioned, the tool is constantly updating and generating new data. This is represented in the background by the dotted icon in the upper left corner.
The process list, shown below, is updated with information every 30 seconds. You can see the name of the app, its process number and what type of information it displays, and its start and end times.
