Manipulating images in Photoshop is a complex task. Though this process may seem daunting, the truth is, Photoshop is much simpler than it first appears. In fact, it’s almost like a user-friendly version of a drafting program. In this chapter, we demystify layers, introduce the Layers dialog box, and show you how to change the way layers behave. We also discuss adjustments that can help with both tonal changes and color modifications. After that, we introduce several commands that enable you to save your work or combine layers to create more complex images.

Knowing the Basics of Layers

Layers are the basic building blocks of any Photoshop image. A Photoshop document contains layers on top of one another; for example, Figure 18-1 shows a finished illustration with all of its layers. You use the layers to combine separate elements and to change the way they appear, as well as to change their position on the image.

Most of the manipulations you make on your Photoshop document involve adding or subtracting layers. For example, you use the Layers dialog box to organize your work. When working with layers, it’s important to understand that you can move, duplicate, or delete layers, which can significantly change how your work looks.

Figuring out how layers work

Photoshop uses a layer-based editing system, so think of it as a technique for combining elements into layers. To create a layer, follow these steps:

1. Create a new image.

2. Choose Layers⇒New Layer.

After you create a new layer, you are returned to the Layers dialog box. If your document is an active Photoshop document, then you see the Create a New Layer dialog box; otherwise, you see the Layers panel, as shown in Figure 18-2. In the Layers panel, you see the

The PSD format

Before you start using Photoshop Elements to create you images, you will need to know the necessary information, and most of that information is stored in the Photoshop file format: the Photoshop (.psd) file. The PSD file contains all the information that Photoshop uses to create the image.

The PSD file consists of different items, including layers, colours, objects and brushes, but the main component is the Photoshop Image layer, which contains the actual image.

The Photoshop file is actually two files that are different sizes. The large file is the Photoshop Photoshop file. It is usually at least 350MB in size. The small file is the Photoshop Photoshop thumbnail file. This file is smaller, but only 2-3MB in size.

The Photoshop Photoshop file contains the actual image that you will see in your project. The Photoshop Photoshop thumbnail file only contains a thumbnail of the actual image in your project.

These two file formats are not separate files but are one file with a different name.

The PSD file format was introduced in version 5 (or CS2), with all the current versions of Adobe Photoshop, so this is the format you will use for your images. The PSD file format is a binary file format. If you open a PSD file with a normal word processor, you will not be able to open it.

You can combine all of the Brush and Eraser tools for image retouching. You can also use the Eraser tool in combination with the Paint Brush tool.

The Pen tool is the most useful brush for image retouching. It is used to create attractive effects. You can use it to draw on areas of an image. You can use it to draw shapes and lines on your images. It is also an effective tool to connect various objects on an image.

There are different types of Pen tools available such as the Pencil, Brush and Type tools.

You can use the Pen tool to create handwritten marks on an image, shapes and curved lines. You can use the Pen tool for retouching purposes, as well as create artificial motion effects.
