## Adding a Layer to a Photoshop File
To add a layer to a Photoshop file, simply open the file and click on the layer icon in the layers palette. (Refer to Figure 10-2.) A new layer named Layer 1 will appear in the Photo Editor. Now you may be wondering why an image editing program uses layers. As in traditional arts and crafts, Photoshop layers are divided into several different levels. For example, you may place your image on a background layer, then place the image on top of that background layer, and then place the canvas on top of that background layer, and so on.
With this in mind, you may find it easier to work with layers than separate images. A background layer never shows in the final image, so you can visually see the progress of the project by looking at each separate layer.
## Editing Layers
As you go through the chapter, you may find it useful to create a new layer by using the Layer menu (the Layers dialog box will open) and then clicking OK. Now you can apply editing operations to that layer.
Layers can be arranged in any order you like. (They don’t necessarily need to be in ascending order, starting with the top most layer.) To rearrange the layers, simply click the Layer Up or Layer Down buttons to swap the layers with another layer in ascending or descending order.
You can work on just one layer at a time. Select the layer(s) that you want to work on. You can then delete layers (discussed in the next section) or use the Paint Bucket tool to adjust the contents of the layer. To add a layer, drag it into place. You can move layers up and down and even resize them. The layers cannot overlap or overwrite each other.
