However, this training video contains no in-depth previews of the software, and no chapters on photography are included.
# Chapter 3: Using Photoshop
Photoshop CS5 is a very powerful tool, packed full of tools and techniques that will allow you to do whatever you want with images. The interface may look daunting to a beginning user but it’s actually pretty straightforward.
However, it is worth noting that you won’t usually need to use every tool and technique you see in the interface. This is where some of the special techniques used for a more professional image are worth considering.
To get you started, the remainder of this chapter will explain the interface and take you through some of the more common tasks.
# Interface
The central work area of Photoshop allows you to work with and manipulate images. You may be familiar with tools such as the eraser, paintbrush, pencil tool, or airbrush from other software; these tools are all here in Photoshop as well.
Aesthetics are important to users of software, and Photoshop addresses this with its interface. The interface gives you quick access to the various settings, tools, and layers in the software.
The default interface is shown in Figure 3-1, although it can be changed at any time. The interface is designed to allow you to see layers that are changed at the same time as working on the image, and the tool buttons that are open are highlighted to make them easy to find.

You can use Photoshop Elements to edit, resize, crop, brush out details, add text and other effects, and modify your photos.
This article covers how to edit and organize files in Photoshop Elements.
There are three ways to import and organize images:
You can import photos by putting them in a folder.
You can import photos by dragging them from the Finder or from your desktop.
You can import photos by importing them from iPhoto.
Import photos by putting them in a folder
Most photos you import into Photoshop Elements are in a folder. You can create a new folder or an existing folder.
Follow these steps to do this:
Select Files ▸ New. On the drop-down menu, choose Folders. In the Folder dialog box, choose the location to import the photos. Click OK.
Do this for every photo you want to add to your file collection.
Drag and drop photos
You can import photos you have already saved on your computer by dragging them from the Finder or desktop.
Select the photo.
On the image menu, choose Edit ▸ Import. On the Browse screen, locate the folder with the photos you want to import and click Open. On the Import Photos screen, make sure the Other option is selected and choose a photo format. Click Import.
Import iPhoto photos
If you don’t have Photoshop Elements, you need a different application to import photos from iPhoto.
To import photos from iPhoto into Photoshop Elements, open iPhoto, select an image you want to import, and choose File ▸ Import. Browse to Photoshop Elements on your hard drive and click Open.
Organize your photos
You can create groups and sub-groups to organize your photos, edit them, and share them.
Select the photos you want to organize.
On the menu bar, choose File ▸ Organize. In the Organize panel, select the group or sub-group you want to open. In the Organize panel, drag the photos into the group or sub-group.
It is a good idea to create a new folder to store your photo collections.
Select a folder in the Finder.
On the Finder’s File menu, choose New ▸ Folder.
In the New Folder dialog box, choose the name of the folder and click Create.

It’s true that drone strikes have contributed greatly to the wiping out of Osama bin Laden. But as Americans, we still have the right to be concerned about civilian casualties. There are some questions that the administration and the Congress should be asking that this op-ed doesn’t address.
First, why do the drones kill the unarmed in any case? Who is going to be paying for this? How do you feel about the continuing global war on terror?
Second, where does this “hit and run” strategy leave us in the long term? Will the American people continue to accept the removal of a suspect with an American passport with no due process? Will we continue to support a government that is no longer accountable to the people? Will we continue to tolerate, as professor John Mueller observes, the “gutless” Congress?

Re “Can Obama Use Drone Strikes?” (editorial, July 13):
To the extent to which drones have been helpful in assuring the safety of the American people from terrorist attacks, President Obama should continue and expand their use. And while we should be vigilant about the abuses of drones (see article), the article only raises one side of the issue and does not address other important questions about its use.
First, the main point of the article is that “if Congress says no,” then the president can use the drones. It has been clear to anyone paying attention that the president, since his Inauguration, has been working toward becoming the most powerful man on the planet, and that this is his way of doing so. He is trying to create a system of no-limits-to-power.
The very fact that even this op-ed piece challenges the president is an indication of just how powerful the executive branch is becoming.
Second, the article states that the military is not involved in the drone strikes, but this is not the case. Almost all of the drones are flown from U.S. bases, the pilots are flown from U.S. bases, the targeting is performed by computers based in the United States, and the decision to launch a strike is made by the commander-in-chief.
This should give the president pause for thought before he decides that one

Photoshop has many brush sets, called _sketch_ or _patterns_. You can also use Photoshop’s Pen tool to create vector brushes. Figure 7-3 shows a selection of some of the brushes that are available in Photoshop.
When you use a brush in Photoshop, you specify a color as the foreground and a different color as the background. The strokes in the foreground show up as the color of the foreground color and the strokes in the background as the color of the background color. Figure 7-4 illustrates how color is used to create a background and foreground in a selection. The colors in the illustration vary from black to gray.

Creating an Image Effect
Brushes can be used to create special effects in Photoshop. For example, the following are some of the brush options:
Color distort: This option is useful when the background of an image must be changed. If you paint over the background with a soft, round brush with a color that is slightly darker than the original background, you can make the effect appear as if the background has been punched out or burned away. The degree to which the picture is distorted can be controlled by specifying a percentage. When you apply the brush effect, you select the color that you want as the foreground and background colors. (Because you’re using two colors, you have to select the color from two different channels.)
Gradient distort: This brush option can be used to create a gradient effect that simulates the look of a pastel or charcoal drawing. To select this option, you create a gradient using the Gradient tool (the palette to the right of the main Photoshop window).
Other Options
You can use a number of other brush-related features in Photoshop. For example, you can use the following:
Smudge: This feature is similar to erasing a small portion of an image. To use this feature, first select the tool you want to use. In the image on the left in Figure 7-5, the tool is
