The effect of different intraosseous devices on peri-implant vertical bone loss: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
This study aimed to determine whether different implant design and implant location have a different effect on peri-implant vertical bone loss. A meta-analysis of relative risk (RR) was performed using a random-effect model for implants with single crowns or without antagonist teeth. Eighteen studies were included in this review. Peri-implant bone loss was similar in implants with different dimensions, irrespective of implant brand or design. Peri-implant bone loss was significantly higher in implant platforms with a rougher surface compared to implants with a more polished surface (WMD = 0.21 mm, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.13, 0.29). Similarly, implants inserted in the mandible compared to the maxilla showed greater bone loss (WMD = 0.20 mm, 95% CI 0.13, 0.27). This study suggests that there is no difference in peri-implant bone loss in implants with different dimensions.
