In this article I explain the basic concepts of image editing, including how to convert GIFs to JPEGs and how to convert files from any format into the JPEG format. I explain how to delete items from photos in Photoshop, crop images, add special effects, and convert images from one format to another.

Photoshop basics

The window you see in Figure 1 is the Photoshop workspace. It is often called “the Photoshop editor.” Photoshop is a raster-based image editing program. That means it works by storing a picture as a set of shapes called pixels. Like Microsoft Windows, Photoshop loads its programs into the screen as a series of rectangular windows that can be moved, resized, and closed.

The first step you take when you begin your image editing in Photoshop is to open an image. You can do this by choosing File » Open or using a drag-and-drop action. Photoshop offers many ways to open images, and the method you use depends on the image you are working with.

Photoshop offers three standard selection tools: the Magic Wand, the Lasso, and the Quick Selection tool (QS). You can use these tools to select pixels, erase pixels, or copy selected pixels. You can also use the Selection Brush to paint new areas of an image that you have selected. You use the Quick Selection tool by selecting it in the tool palette (Window » Tool Palette) and then moving your mouse around to select pixels.

You can access and control many other tools by choosing Window » Tool Options or using the menu in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

You can use multiple selection tools, such as the Quick Selection and Lasso tools, to select the area of an image you want to edit and drag the selection tool over the image. You can then use the selection tools to edit the pixels selected.

Tip: The Quick Selection tool’s settings appear in the Tool Options palette (Window » Tool Options) and include such options as which image you want to use as your background.
