You can then crop the layers together to create a low-resolution thumbnail of your entire design.

Think of layers as being like the props in a stage play. Each layer adds a new dimension. Your original image, with all its detail and subtlety, is on the first or base layer. Depending on the complexity of your design, you may add an additional layer to take care of a few special effects. The next level would add a layer to add a text layer, then another layer to add a layer of transparency, and so on. For instance, a watermark is an example of a special effect that requires a special layer.

Most often you’ll add layers from the Layers palette or the Image Layers panel. You may also add layers by using keyboard shortcuts, the Layer menu, or the Image⇒Layers⇒New Layer command. You can find out more about using the image layers in the next section
