Researchers find that the brain makes and uses connections for music and language

(Nanowerk News) A new research report published July 20 in the “Journal of Neuroscience” by researchers from Princeton University, the University of Chicago and the Carnegie Mellon University Department of Music describes a way in which the brain stores and recreates language and music.

The researchers discovered that the brain uses a completely different mechanism to store and recreate language when compared to the brain’s mechanism for creating music.

“Most people think the two systems are completely independent, when in fact the reverse is true,” said Matthew Cobb, a graduate student in the Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago who is the lead author of the report. “The brain controls music and language the same way, but music is stored and recreated in a fundamentally different way from language.”

Cobb noted that this finding could help researchers better understand the neurological basis of language disorders, including speech or language impairment, and how such disorders develop. Language and music are fundamentally different in how they are processed in the brain.

Music’s highly structured structure allows for an exact and precise sequence of notes to be played. Language’s accuracy and organization cannot be expressed in similar manner.
