Intractable or autonomous?

Life is not an unstructured sequence of events. The question of how to get from A to B does not arise in a vacuum. Life has an objective and intrinsic order. A problem arises when order becomes counter-productive to the expression of life itself, when the loss of life is the probable result of a change in order. Then something must be done to prevent the loss of life.

Autonomous systems make decisions as to how to achieve their goals, usually by taking action to achieve those goals. The more well-known theory of action games is that they model the organism of a human being in that the human organism is supposed to make decisions upon a set of goals. If the goals are simultaneously “lower order” goals, of the human being on her own, then these goals are merely “background goals”. The system is said to have “intractable goals” if it makes a decision as to what action to take, and then executes that action.

This is the case when the system sees the current state of the world and is expected to determine its future state. That the state of the world is invariant, as opposed to just a set of options, is very important. Most organisms have a body and a brain. If either of these is damaged, the organism can no longer make decisions and is said to be “unintelligent”.

This is the case in technological systems as well. A technical system is intelligent only if it obeys the laws of physics and the laws of mathematics. It is intelligent only if it is consistent.

To put this another way, the system becomes unintelligent if it fails to match the properties of the environment. In technical systems, these properties are defined as Invariants, and they constitute the environment. For example, the state of the universe is invariant. If some rules are violated, then the system is supposed to make decisions about what to do to bring the system back into conformance with the invariant.

So a technical system is intelligent if it exhibits an invariant model of the environment. This model does not constitute the environment, but it represents its properties. The environment is beyond the reach of the technical system, but the model
